about

Simon Burstall (b. 1975, Darwin, Australia) is a New York–based photographer whose work explores youth, identity, and the emotional texture of lived experience. Raised in Sydney, he began photographing his friends surfing at age 15, later studying photography in art school, where his thesis documented Australia's early '90s rave scene.

In 2000, Burstall moved to New York and assisted leading photographers including David Sims, Steven Klein, and Herb Ritts. His commercial and editorial work has appeared in V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, and campaigns for Gap, Hugo Boss, and Lancôme.

His book '93: Punching The Light (Damiani Books, 2019) — a documentary portrait of Sydney's underground rave scene shot when Burstall was 17 — received widespread critical acclaim, with coverage in Vogue, i-D, Vice, Creative Review, Huck, Metal Magazine, and Document Journal. In 2026 the work was featured in The Guardian and acquired for the permanent collection of the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney.

He continues to photograph daily and is currently developing new long-form documentary work.
